WSUS 3.0 SP2 Install and Configure

Windows Server 2008 R2

  1. Launch Server Manager
  2. Add Roles
  3. Install: Web Server (IIS) and Windows Server Update Services
  4. WSUS Configuration
  5. Synchronize from Microsoft Update,  next
  6. Provide proxy server, if not, next
  7. Start Connecting, next
  8. Choose Language, next
  9. Products, accept default unless you want to customize it, next
  10. Classifications, select what’s best for your environment, next
  11. Synchronization Schedule, finish

To Configure Automatic Updates in Active Directory Group Policy Object

  1. Launch Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) -> Create new policy for your client computers -> Edit.
  2. Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update.
  3. Details pane, Enabled the Configure Automatic Updates, OK.
  4. Enabled the Specify intranet Microsoft update service location (this policy will point the client computers to the WSUS server).
  5. Type http://WSUSservername on the two boxes, Set the intranet update service for detecting updates and Set the intranet statistics server.

In WSUS server, launch the Microsoft Console Update Services.  You will see client computers populating on Computers page.  Default group policy updates in the background every 90 minutes.  You can update the policy sooner, from client computer, type> gpupdate /force.
